Nahh I wouldn't see VM being a cause of a crash.
To the OP here is what you do, Uninstall all your current GPU drivers (after of course you downloaded the most recent versions first).
Restart PC, and then install the new drivers, this will make sure any unwanted 3rd party files that may have been interfering before will be gone.
Once installed, you may have to restart a 2nd time for the drivers to kick in, but if your on Vista or 7 you may get lucky and don't have to.
Is your GPU overclocked? Is it overheating when in use?
And as the last person said what is your PC specifications.

If all else fails he could try troubleshooting by right clicking the exe game file and then click troubleshooting, answere the most easy question's. The computer will find the error it self. I fix alot of my games that way.

maybe your graphics card gets to hot, you can try rivatuner program, and check temperatures etc.
